Abstract

[7783-53-1] MnF3 (MW 111.938)

InChI = 1S/3FH.Mn/h3*1H;/q;;;+3/p-3

InChIKey = SRVINXWCFNHIQZ-UHFFFAOYSA-K

(reagent used for controlled fluorination)

Physical Data: d 3.54 g cm−3, ΔH0f−238 ± 5 kcal mol−1, ΔH0subs 68 ± 3 kcal mol-1.

Solubility: insoluble in organic solvents, reacts instantly with water, soluble in anhydrous HF, 0.164 g/100 mL.

Form Supplied in: dull purple-pink fine powder when fresh; widely available.

Purification unnecessary for organic use.

Handling, Storage, and Precautions: gives HF when exposed to moisture and degrades rapidly to manganese dioxide. Bottles should be opened only in a fume hood and gloves should be worn as the fine powder may drift out of the bottles. For convenience, it can be dispensed and weighed in open air when humidity is reasonably low and handling is rapid. For long term processing (e.g., grinding with other reagents) a dry box is essential. Liberates fluorine when heated to ca. 300 °C under vacuum or in an open vessel. Toxicity unknown because of severe damage to organs caused by hydrolysis.
